I have been a fan of many of the Beat Poets for years. One of my favorites is Gregory Corso, one of the central figures in this literary and lifestyle movement.
As Ginsberg notes on the back cover of this volume: “Corso is a poet’s poet, his verses pure velvet.”
Here is a sample:
St. Tropez, Early Morning
How all night long I waited
dreamless and waves of ending—
The boats in low waters
are leaning on their sides;
black clouds and no sun;
a sleek Polaris slips by;
men are conspiring against men;
Bridget Bardot lovelier than death;
I feel and miss my friends of old—
Towards heaven we’re going
towards heaven I’m told.
