A Longing for the Light is the only available bilingual Spanish-English translation of the poetry of Nobel Laureate Vicente Aleixandre. I was lucky, as I have noted previously in my blog, to have found his poetry long ago, when a collect of twenty of his poems was translated by Robert Bly and published by Bly’s Seventies Press.
The current collection spans Aleixandre’s career and includes translations a number prominent poets, including W.S. Merwin and Bly.
Concerning his work, Aleixandre wrote in his Nobel lecture: “Hours of solitude, hours of creation, hours of meditation. Solitude and meditation gave me an awareness, a perspective which I have never lost: that of solidarity with the rest of mankind. Since that time I have always proclaimed that poetry is communication, in the exact sense of that word.”
