Richard Tillinghast was a mentor of mine at U.C. Berkeley. I read his first collection, Sleep Watch, back in 1971 when I was taking a creative writing class he taught. I likely would never have continued to write poetry without Richard’s influence.
He is a wonderful poet and this volume provides work drawn from many of his numerous collections. I tried to chose a stanza or two from one of his works, but there just too many poems of his that I admire. So choosing was too difficult.
As Louis Simpson said of this volume: "Tillinghast's poems range confidently among different cultures. He has a sense of history as a living force. His experiments in meter, rhyme, and free verse are important. He is a wonderfully gifted poet, one of the few. — Louis Simpson
