Art Elser’s book won the Colorado Authors’ League 2018 award for best poetry collection by a member. It’s beautifully written poetry that leads the reader through the vast beauty of the prairie and the struggles for survival of man and animal in its unforgiving environment.
Here is a sample:
Across a sun-warmed meadow a sulfur
flashes brash yellow wings above sere grass.
Alighting as if to collect pollen the color
of its wings, it balances light on a bare stem
that once held a carillon of Bluebells.
The low angle of the sun, its fragile warmth
chilled by each breeze, warns of winter’s approach
just behind the mountains. The arching manes
of wispy, cirrus clouds across a turquoise sky
tell of tomorrow’s snowbound, flightless death.
