I have been reading Breton for years. I still have a copy of the first collection I bought I bought of his, back in 1974!
He was the founder of Surrealism and a major leader of the avant-garde in France following World War I, along with the Dadaists, also one of my favorite literary and artistic movements.
Unfortunately, the current bilingual volume of his work does not include my favorite poem, “Hotel of Flashes” (“Hôtel des étincelles”). You can now find it online. Here are the opening lines:
The philosophical butterfly
Alights on the rosy star
And that makes a window in hell
But the collection does include one his most famous poems, “Free Union” (L’union libre”).
